At Consumer Reports, we know that privacy is a right – and we’ve been a fervent advocate for legislation that protects your privacy. Several states have passed laws which extend new rights to know what data companies collect about you, and to request that companies delete or stop selling your personal information. Unfortunately, this legal protection does not necessarily guarantee that these rights are easy to use. Consumer Reports research showed that working with companies to exercise data privacy rights can be a confusing, time-consuming process for consumers.
That’s why we designed and developed Permission Slip, an app that makes it easy to take back control of your personal data. The app shows you what kinds of information companies collect and gives you a simple interface to exercise your data privacy rights with a tap. Since first releasing Permission Slip on iOS last year, we’ve served over 13,000 users and delivered over 200,000 data rights requests on behalf of the community.
Today, we’re thrilled to announce that Permission Slip is now available on Android phones in addition to iOS devices. We want data rights to be as available and usable as possible, and expanding to Android means that smartphone owners across the country will now be able to better manage and control their personal information via Permission Slip.
